Girl or Boy

This post is long overdue, but from being pregnant to 6 months post pregnancy all other things came to a standstill as hubby and I spent most of our time prepping for Baby D’s arrival and then getting into parent mode. However, things have finally gotten back on a schedule so here I am with my first post of 2020.

First time pregnancy can be filled with lots of anxiety and joy. With all those emotions building, Hubby and I decided to harness our creative energy and plan a gender reveal. We figured, why not? It would give us both something fun to plan and look forward to. We took a trip to Santa Barbara where he had first proposed to me back in 2014, for our 4th wedding anniversary. We had a vision of a romantic celebration, but turning that vision into a reality took weeks of planning. Even when it felt like everything was planned, we had to think on our feet and make a last minute run to a few party stores to gather much-needed supplies.

From planning the small details, to getting the right props, to organizing and communicating with our photographer, everything came down to a moment that I will never forget: popping a balloon to reveal bright pink Holi powder for Baby D.

Here are some tips I am sharing to make planning a gender reveal a bit easier.

  • Celebrate with the whole family or alone? We chose to have ours alone because it was easier for us to travel a short distance, find a photographer/videographer, and we wanted to experience finding out with one another. We then played the video for our families and each time we played it was like having another gender reveal!

  • How to keep the gender results a complete secret until the end? It is a good idea to incorporate some help with this. We asked our OB/GYN to seal the gender results in an envelope for us that we gave to the photographer. He then helped us out with the props and kept everything secret until the very end.

  • Who will take pictures/record? If you are being budget friendly ask a friend or invest in a tripod. Since Hubby and I were taking a personal/romantic trip without family and friends, we worked with photographers to capture the moment as a couples and gender reveal session.

  • What props to use? The props you choose is how the reveal will happen. Pick something fun and exciting that will make the moment magical. We used black balloons and colored powder for main reveal but also had some additional props for pictures. PRO TIP: buy extra props and test them out a few days before your reveal. There are tons of "gender reveal fail" videos, and practicing is one way you can avoid problems!

  • What to wear? Keep it neutral so it won’t take away from colors you choose to represent the reveal.

  • Most importantly always remember to keep it safe, have fun and cherish the moment no matter the gender.

Recent events of the California Gender Reveal Wildfires remind us that we should always take special precautions to protect the environment and keep others safe. I would like to clarify that we left no trash behind and the powdered colors we used were 100% biodegradable.
